terrorism Essay -- essays research papers
Effects of Terrorism Terrorism is the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives. --FBI Definition On Tuesday September 11th, 2001 our Nation was forever changed. Following the single largest terrorist attack ever experienced by this country, thousands are dead or missing, tens of thousands of people in this country know someone who was killed or injured, and many more have witnessed or heard about the attack through the media. The impact of this magnitude of terrorist attack will affect people at all levels of involvement: victims, bereaved family members, friends, rescue workers, emergency medical and mental health care providers, witnesses to the event, volunteers, members of the media, the United States of America, and the entire World. Terrorism takes away a sense of security and safety at both the individual and community level, which effects society. It can challenge the natural need of humans for this world to be predictable, orderly and controllable. Studies have shown that deliberate violence creates longer lasting mental health effects than natural disasters or accidents.1 1 Scott, R., Brooks, N. & McKinlay, W. (1995). Post-traumatic morbidity in a civilian community: A follow-up at 3 years. Journal of Traumatic Stress, 8, p. 412. Consequences both for individuals and the community are prolonged, and survivors often feel that injustice has been done to them. This can lead to prejudice, anger, frustration, helplessness, fear, and a strong desire for revenge. Acting on these feelings and need for revenge can increase feelings of anger and guilt, rather than decreasing them. Societyââ¬â¢s ability to naturally recover from traumatic events are strong.2 For people directly involved, fear, anxiety, re-experiencing, and urges to avoid, will gradually decrease over time. Research has shown that those who are most at risk for more severe traumatic stress reactions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are those who have experienced the greatest magnitude of exposure to the traumatic event, such as victims and their families.3 Many surviving rescue workers will also have direct relationships, or indirect exposure to those who are missing or killed, and will therefore be coping with ... ...th chemical or biological agents: psychiatric aspects. Anatomy of Criticism by Northrop Frye Essay -- Anatomy Criticism North
Anatomy of Criticism by Northrop Frye In Anatomy of Criticism, author Northrop Frye writes of the low mimetic tragic hero and the society in which this hero is a victim. He introduces the concept of pathos saying it ââ¬Å"is the study of the isolated mind, the story of how someone recognizably like ourselves is broken by a conflict between the inner and outer world, between imaginative reality and the sort of reality that is established by a social consensusâ⬠(Frye 39). The hero of Hannah W. Fosterââ¬â¢s novel, The Coquette undoubtedly suffers the fate of these afore mentioned opposing ideals. In her inability to confine her imagination to the acceptable definitions of early American female social behavior, Eliza Wharton falls victim to the ambiguity of her societyââ¬â¢s sentiments of womenââ¬â¢s roles. Because she attempts to claim the freedom her society superficially advocates, she is condemned as a coquette and suffers the consequences of exercising an independent mind. Yet, Eliza does not stand a lone in her position as a pathetic figure. Her lover, Major Sanford -- who is often considered the villain of the novel -- also is constrained by societal expectations and definitions of American men and their ambition. Though Sanford conveys an honest desire to make Eliza his wife, society encourages marriage as a connection in order to advance socially and to secure a fortune. Sanford, in contrast to Eliza, suffers as a result of adhering to social expectations of a maleââ¬â¢s role. While Eliza suffers because she lives her life outside of her social categorization and Sanford falls because he attempts to maneuver and manipulate the system in which he lives, both are victims of an imperfect, developing, American society. Though Elizaââ¬â¢s ... ... comic hero. This flaw seems to be a result of the greater defect of the society in which he functions. Certainly not an innocent and having his own characterization of the same fatal flaw as Eliza ââ¬â a decisive determination for independence -- Sanford shares in the traditional tragic conclusion of isolation and loss. Despite an attractive interpretation that Eliza Wharton deserves her tragic fate because she is too scandalous of a seductress, her fall is actually a result of her desire for autonomy in a society that denies women that right. Also, to view Sanford as a heartless villain would be reductionary. He too, like Eliza, is subject to the judgements, constraints, and values of a flawed society in which he is separated from his true love. Both characters fall as a result of their desire for relational freedoms that early American society denies them.

Web Design Report
| Coursework 1 Website Report | Diarmuid Bogner / B00614798| | Dr Hui Wang Dr Hui Wang Contents Page Introduction____________________________________________________________ pages 3 -4 Analysis_______________________________________________________________ pages 5 ââ¬â 6 System Design_________________________________________________________ pages 7 ââ¬â 11 Implementation_______________________________________________________ pages 12 ââ¬â 16 Conclusion___________________________________________________________ pages 17 ââ¬â 21 Appendices______________________________________________________________ page 21Introduction Purpose The purpose of this website was for a web development based company showcase the web sites they have created, the services they offer, help and support for new and old clients and to display contact information. Another purpose for creating this website was to help increase the amount of clients that the web development company was getting. Creat ing this website also allowed me as a beginner web developer to further develop the skills that I have already acquired such as XHTML and CSS. Organisation and Function of the Website The website I created is organized into several pages. Each page was named with an appropriate name to correspond with the information that was viewed on that page. For example the contact page was named ââ¬Å"contatct. htmlâ⬠. This easily allows me to identify which page I was currently working on and would help if I had to make any changes or updates in the future. The website is made up with 15 different pages. In my website directory there is also a CSS file called style. css. This file contains all the style information on my website for example the background colour or the text font, size and colour. Naming the . ss file ââ¬Å"styleâ⬠again would help me or anyone else having to edit the file knows what the purpose of the file is. The website layout follows the standard top to bottom o rganization. The website has a logo at the top, and then below is the navigation which is easy located by visitor so they can easily navigate around the website. The function of the navigation bar is to create links between different pages of the website. For example clicking on the ââ¬Å"Aboutâ⬠link will bring you to the about page. There are also links on the links page which bring the user to external pages on other websites.Outline of Information to Be Included In the Report This report will contain quite a large amount of information. Below I will briefly outline the information included in the report: Introduction ââ¬â In the introduction section of the report I will explain the purpose of the website I created, the organisation and the function of the website which basically means how the website works. Analysis ââ¬â In the analysis section of this report I explain what the target users are and what they require from my website. The report will also contain a da ta collection which is where I sourced all my information to create the website. System Design ââ¬â The system design will contain an outline design of each page that will be created for the website and the rationale. Also this area will contain all the links of the pages and the type of information that has to be included on each of these pages. Implementation ââ¬â In this section the report there will be screen dumps of each page and I will explain the main features of each page. Also I will have a description of how my main features where added to the website. Conclusion ââ¬â the conclusion section of the report will contain a complete evaluation of the website, and if I feel that my finished website has meet all the user requirements and how I have met them. I will review what went well and what didnââ¬â¢t go as well as expected when designing and implementing my website. Also I will include some ideas that I think my make an improvement to my website. Appendices à ¢â¬â The appendices section will contain any references that were used throughout the report, design and implementation of the website. Analysis Target Users and their RequirementsThe target users for my website can be anyone. But the main focus is for users that are interested in obtaining a website for their personal use or for a business. The website has requirements that I need to insure that I meet them all. Requirements * Clear layout website for easy browsing ââ¬â The website must be made up with a simple, effective a clear layout and not seem confusing. * Easy functionality ââ¬â Users on the website must be able to use the functions of the website with ease. * Appealing colour scheme/template ââ¬â The colour scheme and the template/layout need to be appealing using bright colours and nice imagery. Corresponding information ââ¬â The information on the website needs to be relevant to the website, for example information about football would not be relevant t o a web development organisation. * Follow the HCI guidelines ââ¬â The website needs to strictly follow the Human Computer Interaction guidelines. For example I need to take into consideration that some visitors on my website maybe colour blind so using colours that users can see clearly wither colour blind or not. * Easy to update and maintain ââ¬â The website needs to allow easy maintain and update when needed. To achieve this using proper indenting and comments on the code will help me to find areas of the code that need updated. * User friendly ââ¬â I need to make sure that the website is user friendly and that the users browsing my website can easily navigate around the site and can read the information that my website displays. * Compatible ââ¬â Making the website compatible with all browsers is a requirement. This is because if one user is viewing the page using Mozilla Firefox another user using internet explorer may see the website differently and this could affect the users overall experience of the website.Data Collection All of the information I used for my website was written by me, I did however use the internet for some information such as my images, icons and links. For my icons and images I used a website called http://www. iconfinder. com/ and I also used Google image search. For some of the definitions on my ââ¬Å"Linksâ⬠page I searched Google, and at the top of the search results page a definition appeared. Throughout writing my CSS code I used http://www. w3schools. com/ as a reference for certain CSS techniques such as creating my website background. Outline of Page DesignsI found that using text boxes in Microsoft Word was a great way for me to design the layout of each page on my website. You can see below how I achieved this. You can see evidence of each of the users requirements from the screenshots above. Below are all the requirments and how I felt that I have met them. * Clear layout website for easy browsing ââ¬â My website has been made using a simple layout which only contains a header, navigation, content area and a footer navigation. The website is also easy to brow se as I asked members of my family and friends to try and navigate around and they could do this with ease and no confusion. * Easy functionality ââ¬â All of the functions that my website uses are all easy to use. For example the forms which the users complete to contact the website administrator are all very self-explanatory and users have no problem completing the form. * Appealing colour scheme/template ââ¬â The colour scheme and the template that I have created is very appealing. Again I have got friends and family to try to use the website and they have all commented that it is very olourful. You can see evidence of this with the use of the background image and icons on different pages of the website. * Corresponding information ââ¬â All of the information on the website corresponds to the type of the website that I created. * Follow the HCI guidelines ââ¬â I have followed the HCI guidelines very strictly when creating this website. An example of this would be t hat the website does not use any colours that colour blind users may find difficulty viewing. * Easy to update and maintain ââ¬â The layout created allows for easy updating and maintenance. For example if I wanted to add a new page to the website all that must be done is a copy of the page, delete the information that was copied, add new information to the page and add the page into the navigation bar. * User friendly ââ¬â I find that my website is quite user friendly. The website is easy to use and the information is clear and users would have no problem reading and understanding the information. * Compatible ââ¬â I have fully tested the website with a few of the most popular web browsers. You can see evidence of this below: Chrome Internet Explorer Mozilla FirefoxAs you can see from the above screenshots that the website displays correctly in all browsers so I have met the compatibility requirement. Review of Successes and Problems I found that my design was very succes sful. Creating the plan of the design was crucial in creating a fully functional website. I found that making a clear and an easy to follow plan allowed me to implement my website with very few issues and it gave me an insight to what the website would look like when completed and what look I was aiming for. Meeting the user requirements I thought would be a hard obstacle to overcome.I did a module in a computing course which solely focused on Human Computer Interaction This gave me the knowledge of HCI guidelines and ideas on how to follow them and how to stop barriers. Along with my knowledge and a full plan I was able to meet all the user requirements whilst overcoming HCI difficulties. The only thing that didnââ¬â¢t go to plan was the CSS code for my background. When attempting to add the background using CSS I could not get the desired look. The image kept stretching and as I added more content to the page the image repeated. After researching some more CSS online using W3sc hools. om I came up with the idea that the background should stay fixed and the rest of the page should scroll. This fix completely fixed this issue. The code I used is as follows: Ideas on Improvement & Further Development After reviewing my website I have came up with areas that I could improve on and areas of the website that could be further developed. I found in my portfolio gallery when clicking on the image instead of having a text button ââ¬Å"[Back to previous page]â⬠I could have used a rollover button which users would have a lot less difficulty trying to find and also it would make the page more interactive for the user.Instead of having a text button on this page I could have either added a button or better added a support link on the navigation bar. This improvement also gave me an idea where I could further develop my ââ¬Å"Continued Supportâ⬠area by using a PHP help desk script which allowed users to register and they could write issues on tickets that a re then viewed by administrators and support is given. Also adding a help chat room where clients can speak live with support staff. An example of this type of software that could be integrated is ââ¬Å"oS Ticketâ⬠which is an open source software. http://osticket. com/ References: www. google. com/images www. w3schools. com http://www. iconfinder. com/ http://stackoverflow. com/questions/1150163/stretch-and-scale-a-css-image-in-the-background-with-css-only

ââ¬ÅWhat High School Isââ¬Â and ââ¬ÅLearning to Readââ¬Â
Khuong Q Tran Professor Frauenholz English 100, Section NC03 October 15, 2009 ââ¬Å"What High School Isâ⬠by Theodore Sizer and ââ¬Å"Learning to Readâ⬠by Malcolm X Learning has an important role in human being society. By learning a person can gain more knowledge and understanding in order to contribute to the development of society. Learning can be performed in various ways. Specifically, there are two completely different types of learning that produce strength and weakness based on general educational experience. Mark, a Franklin high school student, is described in ââ¬Å"What High School Isâ⬠by Theodore Sizer. On the other hand, Malcolm X, who was convicted of robbery in 1946, came out of jail with the knowledge of Black history and the great questionable of Elijah Muhammad, who was the leader of the Nation of Islam (1935-1975). By analyzing the weakness and strength of the education of Mark and Malcolm, the educational experience of Malcolm is ascribed better , and it inspires those who really seek the benefit of learning. Mark, sixteen years old and a genial grader, has both strength and weakness in his educational experience. First, he has better opportunity for well-rounded education. As a high school junior, Mark has to study various subjects. His obligation is to follow different classes such as English class, typing class, biology class, French class, history class and mathematics class. The approximate time spent for each class is around forty to fifty minutes. Moreover, Mark receives specific guidance and particular structure in every class in which he attends. For instance, Ms. Viola, the English teacher, has her students in turn take parts and read out loud (Sizer 20). In addition to the strong points, Mark has a chance to partake in social study group at his school. For example, at Biology class, Mr. Robbins, the teacher, requires his students to form a circle of three or so n order to study the specimen and to take notes about it (Sizer 22). However, there is also weakness in Markââ¬â¢s educational experience. He mostly encounters a daily external distraction of walking from class to class. Therefore, his education is less profound effect since he has to do other things instead of focusing on studying. Constantly, he has little desire to learn and has no specific goal. As an illustration, Mark feels frustrated, uncomfortable and scared that he wonââ¬â¢t be able to complete his letter (Sizer 21), and that ââ¬Å"Tomorrow, and virtually every other tomorrow, will be the same for Markâ⬠(Sizer 24).In contrast, Malcolm, who was imprisoned for seven years in Charlestown Prison, had totally different strengths in his education. One of the strengths was that Malcolm had a great desire to learn new knowledge. In Charlestown prison, he started his desire of learning from a feeling envy of stock of knowledge of Bimbi (X 78). Moreover, Malcolm kept book-reading motions even though he ââ¬Å"really ended up with little idea of what the book saidâ⬠(X 78). Then he began copying into his tablet all words printed on the dictionaryââ¬â¢s pages in order to understand books (X 78-79).In addition to the strong points, Malcolm had few distractions during the time he studied in prison. The only distraction was from the night guards. At night (from 10pm to 4am), while Malcolm was reading and learning in the dim glow of a light, he often had to jump into his bed and feign sleep whenever he heard the approaching footsteps of the night guards (X 80). Therefore, studying had a profound effect on him because he spent almost fifteen hours studying without distraction. Malcolmââ¬â¢s education, known as homemade education, is a better form of educational experience. He had specific goal for his reading and learning although he spent seven years in prison. His goal was to serve the black man in term of Black and White separatism in the 1950ââ¬â¢s in United States. His meaningful goal led to great reading and learning of certain subjects, such as Black history, Genetics, slavery, Chinese world history and philosophy. Constantly, he says, ââ¬Å"You will never catch me with a free fifteen minutes in which Iââ¬â¢m not studying something I feel might be able to help the black man (X 85). Moreover, Malcolmââ¬â¢s education is really an educational experience.Unlike Markââ¬â¢s education, Malcolm had to begin his fundamental education by learning the vocabulary. Henceforth, he daily spent numerous hours on reading books to gain knowledge and understanding. He himself did that spectacular job without any specific guidance, except for his curiosity only. He said, ââ¬Å"I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity-because you can hardly mention anything Iââ¬â¢m not curious aboutâ⬠(X 85). On the other hand, reading for the sake of knowledge was a significant way to help Malcolm feel a sense of freedom in spite of being in prison.Tru ly, the more he read, the freer he felt. He concludes that ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think anybody ever got more out of going to prison than I did. In fact, prison enabled me to study far more intensely than I would have if my life had gone differently and I had attended some college. â⬠(X 85) In short, Mark represents studentsââ¬â¢ learning style. Meanwhile, Malcolm represents prisonersââ¬â¢ learning style. In fact, both Mark and Malcolm have strength and weakness in their educational experiences. Therefore, the best learning way is to eliminate the weakness and to develop strength in personal skill and talent.A specific goal and a long-term purpose are successful keys of learning. Likewise, there is argument about studying unless it is applied to the contribution of the society. Project Management Email Individual Paper Essay
With the available information from the previous email regarding the projects of Juniper, Palomino and Stargazer, I feel it is in the companyââ¬â¢s best interest to go with the Palomino project moving forward. The reason for not selecting the other two options is because Juniper carries too low of a risk for completion. Stargazer is not worth the high risk of completion and the unfamiliarity of how the final product will be with the customer. The method applied for making this decision was by utilizing the feasibility study. The main purpose of this is because using this project would have to make sense to the company as a whole. Answering all of the questions on Return On Investment (ROI), length of project, risk and overall benefit to Piper Industries. Using the feasibility study for the Juniper and Stargazer projects, it was a basic understanding that previously mentioned material would not be present as with the Palomino model. There are five different phases in project management that involve theà Palomino project and those are (Jacobs & Chase 2011): â⬠¢Project conception and initiation: The main focus of this phase is to ensure the project being presented is realistic and will benefit the company. â⬠¢Project definition and planning: The scope of the project will need an outline so the work which needs to be performed is available. Prioritizing, budgets and timelines are in this phase as well. â⬠¢Project launch or execution: Tasks are assigned and each team is made aware of their responsibilities. â⬠¢Project performance and control: The status and progress will be checked against the actual plan to ensure everything is running smoothly. The project manager will make adjustments as need to keep the original project on target. â⬠¢Project close: Once all tasks are complete and the customer is content with the final product, a lesson learn plan will need to be establishedâ⬠¦ Content: Project Management Recommendation Name: Institution: Date: Dear Ray I duly received your email and we reviewed the three projects with my team. After critical analysis the board felt that the second project on your email (Palomino) was the best project for investment. The risk for completion is average; therefore, it does not put the company at a high risk of losing Dear Mr. Gritsch, Our team wants to thank Piper Industries Corporate vice-president, Wendell Deirelein, for choosing our team to analyze the projects. In the attached document you will find our analysis and recommendation of the Project Proposal that benefits your company. Thank you, Project Manager Project Management Recommendation Project to be Implemented Piper Industries needs a completed project and for it to be generating review within 12 monthââ¬â¢s of the Project Management Officeââ¬â¢s (PMO) review (University of Phoenix, 2012). The project that fits the companyââ¬â¢sà requirements is the Stargazer project. The Stargazer project is efficient and the expectation of the project being completed on time is high. The research and development has already started on the widgets (University of Phoenix, 2012). According to the project descriptions, $450,000 has been spent on the product and they average a total of $575,000 being spent in order to bring the product to the market (University of Phoenix, 2012). Even though the dollar amount spent in this project is high, the return on investment for this project is high; by the third year the product is forecasted to have a return of investments of $750,000 (University of Phoenix, 2012). The product life of this project is forecasted to be 7 years (University of Phoenix, 2012). This product is still not being used, meaning Piper Industries will be the first company to launch the product to the market. By bringing such an innovative product into the marketplace, it can make Piper Industries the leader in the industry (University of Phoenix, 2012). Five Phases According to Stricker (2013), ââ¬Å"Whether a project is large or small, the stages of a project are ultimately the same. Initiate the project, and then move into planning, followed by executionâ⬠¦. Project Management Recommendation Piper Industries Corp. wants to make a decision on the appropriate project to invest in based on three recommendations. First, Juniper is an enhancement of a current widget being offered by the company, while Palomino is a new line of widget products including enhancements using existing technology, and Stargazer is a production of completely new widgets, which research and development have already started on. The company assigned our team to analyze the three projects and make recommendations on which project the company should invest in. The recommendation must include our description of the five phases of the project and the key deliverables (project completion date and cost) for each project (University of Phoenix, 2013). The Project Recommendation Based on the break-even analysis for the Juniper project it basically shows the company will not, or barely break-even, during the life cycle of the production of these widgets due to technology advancements causing this product line to become obsolete after three years? It has a cost of $325,000 and Return on Investment only producing $250,000 for the two to three years of production with the third year being the end of life for this product. If the company chooses the Palomino project it will also have a hard time breaking-even and producing revenue streams over the life-time of the production with a 5% margin of error with the seventh year being the end of life for the product. The strength of the economy plays a large determining factor in this forecast due to 5% differential in the life cycle of this product. Palomino will cost $655,000 with the Return of Investment being $450,000 over a five year period with that 5%, plus or minus, margin of error. Profit would then start to be recognized in the sixth and seventh year of the life cyâ⬠¦ Thank you for choosing our team to analyze the three projects your company has proposed. After meeting with my team and analyzing the data of the three projects, we have to come to an agreement that the project your company should invest in is the Juniper project. Since your company is currently somewhat familiar with the product involved in this project, it will be more efficient and cost effective to continue the enhancement of this product. There are five phases of the project that must take place in order for the project to be a success. The first phase is the planning phase which includes a product approval and launch of the actual product development process. This also includes a mission statement that includes the target market of the product, business goals, key assumptions and constraints. The second phase is concept development. This phase is focused more on the needs of the target market, alternative product concepts which will need further testing and development. The concept is key in this phase because it describes the form, function and features of the product that are accompanied by a set of specifications and an economic justification for the project (Jacobs, pg. 74). The third phase is design detail which entails the specific parts of the product and all standard parts that are neededà from the supplier. This process also includes drawings and computer files that describe the geometry of each tool, purchased parts and process plans. The fourth phase is testing and refinement. This phase is includes construction and evaluation of multiple versions of the preproduction of the product. This is the time when we would be prototypes in order to determine if the product satisfies customer needs. The final phase is the production ramp-up. The product is made of intended production system. The purpose of the ramp-up is to get the workforce trained and to work out a remaining issues that may arise during the process such asâ⬠¦ Dear Mr. Gritsch: In continuation of your email dated February 10, 2014, I have completed analysis of three projects: Juniper, Palomino and Stargazer. The risk levels in Juniper, Palomino, and Stargazer are low, medium, and high respectively. It is in the best interest of Piper Industries Corporation to move forward with the Stargazer project. Stargazer is selected due to its feasibility and risk level. From market feasibility study, some strategic customers have already indicated interest in the product. Therefore, I would recommend that the board invest in the project, Stargazer; particularly because the company has already invested $450,000 and the ROI is very high.
